Energy
Vienna uses garbage for heating and cooling the city's highly efficient garbage to energy program has been the backbone of Vienna's urban energy production for many decades. Over 290,000 households and 5,800 businesses are connected to Wien Energie's extensive (1,000 plus kilometre) district heating system; now the system is being renovated to provide district cooling, an ecological and economically attractive form of air conditioning. Vienna is also implementing innovative programs designed to encourage the production of renewable energy and to increase energy efficiency.
