„Vienna Know-how: Urban Technologies and Strategies" at 80th Izmir International Fair

The metropolis of Izmir located on the West Coast of Turkey near the antique city of Ephesus is the venue of a large annual trade fair. In 2011, Austria was partner country of the 80th Izmir International Fair, which was held from 8 to 18 September in Izmir. One of its attractions which met with great interest was the exhibition "Vienna Know-how". Vienna's City Councillor for Housing Michael Ludwig opened the exhibition on 8 September 2011 in Izmir as part of the opening of the Austrian booth in the presence of the turkish minister of industry Nihat Ergün, the turkish minister of culture and tourism Ertugrul Günay and the Austrian Minister of Economy Reinhold Mitterlehner. The Austrian pavilion, which provided numerous Austrian enterprises with an opportunity to present themselves to an interested audience, and several supporting events were organised by the Austrian Economic Chamber. The entire trade fair booth was designed by the Vienna-based architects' office Neumayer.

The exhibition "Vienna Know-how: Urban Technologies & Strategies" looks at Vienna as a liveable city, the municipal infrastructure, the related innovations and the performance of its enterprises, entities and employees and presents Vienna as a great place to live in, offering excellent infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities.

From April to June 2010, the exhibition was on display in Vienna. In September 2010, it was shown for the first time internationally at the Museum of Applied Arts in Belgrade, and in spring 2011 it was presented at the Museum of the City of Bucharest. In both locations, the exhibition was attended by a large number of visitors. Now the international tour is continued with presentations in Izmir and Baku. In addition, the exhibition is currently on display at the Vienna Thermal Spa. In At the fair in Izmir, which attracts more than 1 million visitors each year, the exhibition was presented in Turkish, complemented by a Turkish exhibition catalogue.

Showcase event on "Environmental Technology and Environmental Protection Know-How in Turkey"

On the occasion of the 80th Izmir International Fair, the Austrian Foreign Trade Centre in Ankara organised a showcase event on "Environmental Technology and Environmental Protection Know-How in Turkey". In addition to renewable energy, the areas of waste management, water supply, wastewater disposal and air purification record the strongest growth with regard to the realisation of environmental projects in Turkey. In the next few years, Turkey will make numerous investments in the environmental technology sector, in order to bring the emerging industrial country closer to modern standards. Particularly the large cities, such as Ankara, Istanbul or Izmir, will increasingly employ environmentally friendly technologies, which are indispensable for the further expansion of the multi-million cities.

This showcase event took advantage of the setting provided by the Izmir International Fair, at which Austria as one of the partner countries was represented in different sectors, to make Austria's quality on the environmental sector known in the region and establish contacts between the Austrian participants and the major local institutions. In addition to a number of presentations, B2B talks with potential local partners were also organised.

In this context, Alexandra Vogl delivered a keynote paper, presenting Vienna's urban and environmental technologies, the city's approach to this issue and developments in this field and particularly addressed the Smart Cities Initiative, which is a topical issue across the EU at present.
