Workshop - Tram Planning in Ankara

On 5 July 2010, a workshop on "Tram Planning in Ankara", organised by TINA VIENNA, took place in Ankara, where representatives of the City of Vienna and representatives of the City of Ankara discussed specific options for establishing a tram network in Ankara. TINA VIENNA was represented by Rainer Müller.

The strong growth of the City of Ankara as a result of urban expansion and inner-city densification leads to increasingly growing traffic and environmental problems in inner-city areas. Therefore the City of Ankara considers the establishment of a tram network in addition to its existing dense bus network and its underground railway system, which is currently being constructed and expanded.

Based on the good relations between the two cities of Vienna and Ankara and supported by Austria's ambassador, Heidemarie Gürer, TINA VIENNA, together with ANKEY Consulting, organised a fact-finding mission and a workshop in Ankara on 5 July 2010, which was attended by representatives of the City of Vienna and Vienna's transport authority "Wiener Linien", Viennese planning offices and representatives of the City of Ankara.

In a discussion with Ömer Ulu, the head of the Ankara transport authority (EGO), the different options for building a tram network were dealt with in detail. Urban and transport planning issues as well as issues concerning the technical feasibility of the project were discussed with representatives of the City of Ankara and of the Ankara transport authority during an inspection of the possible routes.

The event was concluded by a meeting with the Mayor of Ankara, Melih Gökcek, who vehemently supports the construction of a tram network in Ankara and would welcome cooperation between the cities of Vienna and Ankara.
